The Bobcat tennis teams won their first games of the spring season with the women’s team defeating Portland State 5-2 and the men’s team defeating Weber State 4-3. Each win marks the first Big Sky Conference (BSC) victory for both squads, who are looking for a momentum swing to jumpstart their 2018 seasons.
The women’s team welcomed the Vikings of Portland State to the Bobcat-Anderson Tennis Center on Feb. 11 for their first BSC match. Portland State played short-handed, which gave the Bobcats a considerable advantage. The Vikings defaulted on their third doubles match, as well as the fifth and sixth singles matches. With the Cats cruising to a 6-0 win in the second doubles match, they were in prime position for a victory with their 3-0 lead. Senior Angelina Philippova secured the Cats’ win with a straight-set victory 6-2, 6-1 decision in the third singles match, giving the Cats a 5-2 decision and a notch in the win column.
The men’s team traveled to Ogden, Utah on Feb. 16 for their first conference tilt against the Wildcats of Weber State. The Cats found themselves ahead early, winning the doubles point but losing three singles matches early, dropping singles one, three and six. The Cats were able to tie the match at 3-3 before Bobcat senior Rok Sitar took his singles match 7-5, 6-7 and 6-0 to top the comeback and give the Cats their first win of the season in a dramatic 4-3 victory.
The Bobcat women’s team will return to action on Mar. 3 for a bout against Portland State University in Missoula. The men will take on Idaho State on Feb. 24 in Pocatello for another Big Sky Conference tilt.
