The Bobcat tennis teams began their spring play over the weekend, with the women’s team winning one of three and the men’s team dropping both matches they played. Both teams began their spring season on the road, with the women taking on Lewis and Clark State College (LCSC), Washington State University and Gonzaga University. The men opened with the University of Utah before finishing out the trip at Brigham Young University (BYU).
The women won their first match of the year against LCSC with three consecutive six-to-one victories in the doubles portion to secure the point. The Cats secured the win with five of the six Bobcats playing singles taking home victories. Senior Angelina Philippova notched the win for the Bobcats when she defeated senior Stephanie Buckingham (LCSC) in straight sets 6-0, 6-2.
The women finished their weekend with matches against Washington State University and Gonzaga University. The Cats looked to continue their success from earlier but were turned away in both matches, losing seven to zero in both.
The men’s team began their weekend with a match against Utah on Jan. 19. The Bobcats came in facing a top tier singles team which lived up to the reputation, sweeping the Bobcats seven to zero to capture the overall match. Senior Rok Sitar tallied the Cats’ only set win of the match in a 6-4 victory over Utah sophomore Slava Shainyan. The Bobcats closed out their weekend with a match against BYU in which the Cats fought hard, but the Cougars ultimately came away with the 6-1 win in the end.
The men next take on Gonzaga on Saturday, Feb. 3 as the women will welcome the Grizzlies to the Bobcat-Anderson Tennis Center on Friday, Feb. 2.
