Rugby takes loss in first D-I game

After transitioning to become a Division I Independent program under USA Rugby, the MSU Rugby Club traveled last weekend to Laramie, Wyo. for their first D-1 match. At the Jackalope Tournament, the Cats faced off against Colorado State. It was a tough loss for the Bobcats with a final score of 69 – 36. The Cats lost most ground in reacting between transitions, penalties and kickoffs.

The divisional change allows the club to compete for national championships which they were unable to do previously. With a firm base of veterans and the team’s largest recruiting class yet – 15, including two international exchange students – the club feels optimistic entering the season, despite their initial loss. The Rugby Club is headed to Alpine, Wyo. this weekend to play University of Wyoming on the beautiful “Field of Dreams” pitch.
