The Montana State cross country team traveled to Grand Forks, North Dakota for the 2014 Big Sky Conference Championships on Nov. 1. The day kicked off with the men’s 8K race, and MSU looked to junior Jake Turner to pace the team. Turner placed seventh with a time of 24:24, and was followed by teammates senior Mike Asay, who placed 16th with a time of 25:02. Junior Zach Kughn nabbed 35th place in 25:24 and freshman Matt Gotta placed 44th in 26:13. Also placing for the Bobcats were: Daniel Nicolls, Ethan Wilhelm and Matthew Tex.
Turner grabbed all-conference honors with his performance and the team placed fifth overall with 147 points.
Next up, the women took the course, led by star freshman Caroline Hardin, who placed 17th, clocking in at 17:48, continuing her solid freshman season. Teammate Rachel Sullivan placed 12th overall with a time of 17:39. Other scorers for the Bobcats: senior Keely West placed 24th in 17:55, sophomore Jenette Northey ran the course in 18:09, coming in 33rd, and freshman Louisa Serpe placed 36th, clocking in at 18:14.
Juniors Rachel Atwood and Michelle Cline also finished, coming in 41st and 52nd, respectively.
Northern Arizona won the women’s title, garnering 61 points, and MSU nabbed third place with 122 points.
The NCAA Mountain Region Championships is next up for the Bobcats. The championships will take place in Albuquerque, New Mexico on Nov. 14, and brings the cross country season to a close.
