A beautiful Saturday afternoon set the scene for the University rugby clubs as they opened their home seasons Oct. 4. The women’s club, the Whitetail, led the way with a 1 p.m. kickoff and a convincing 21-12 victory over Idaho State. Ivanna Lopez, Anna Filipowicz and Mariha Gullickson led the way for the Whitetail. A dominant team effort by the women set up the Bobcat men to take the field at 3 p.m. against Weber State.
The Bobcats came out strong, taking a 13-7 halftime lead. After surrendering two tries (a try is the rugby term for a score), the Bobcats trailed 21-7. The relentless attack led by scrumhalf Aeden Blazina and the Bobcat forward pack, pushed the Aggies to their heels for the final 15 minutes of the game. With time running out and the Bobcats trailing 21-20, the sense of urgency peaked and the attack was relentless.
Captain Matt Asaro was proud of the effort the Bobcats showed. “When some may have folded, the Bobcats went all in.”
A penalty awarded to the Bobcats set up a go-ahead kick for Haydn McDuff, who calmly restored the lead for the Bobcats. The Cats held onto the lead in the final minutes and came away with the victory.
“We played a back and forth game and came out on top because we never let down and we fought for every minute,” captain Ben Morris said. “It was a great show of character for the Cats.”
The Bobcats return to the Roskie Fields this Saturday at 1 p.m. to take on Weber State in the conclusion of the fall season. The Whitetail head to Missoula on Oct. 25 to take on the Missoula Betterside.
