Club soccer prepares to score

Over the past few years the popularity of soccer has spurred the growth of the MSU men’s club soccer team, which start their season Sept. 28 when UM and Montana Tech come to town.

Current captain Luke Byington and Sam Johnson had an idea in 2011, and founded the soccer club. After added interest, the team became the competitive group they are today. The team is made of 25 dedicated players, with the starting 18 being picked for each game.

With a returning group of 16 players and nine new players joining this year, Byington is confident on the capabilities of the squad. “Having a good core group of guys will help us compete at a higher level,” he said. This year the men’s team will be playing against teams from UM, Montana Tech, Gonzaga, Washington State and a few other schools in the region.

When asked about the upcoming season for the team, Byington said the team has the potential to become a stellar team in their conference: “We will be very competitive this year, and the guys are super excited to start the season.” Their home games will be played on the Roskie Fields.

If you are interested in playing with the soccer club, they host social games and pickup games often and a schedule can be found on their website, clubsoccerofmsu.com. They also encourage anyone interested to contact them at montanastateclubsoccer@gmail.com with questions.
