Men’s basketball splits home games

A loud crowd was present on Feb. 20 to watch the Bobcats take on the Idaho State Bengals (ISU) as the Cats ended up with an intense 66-60 victory.

In a matchup of two 7-7 teams, the game was bound to be close. In the last meeting between these two teams, ISU (10-15, 7-9) got the win on their home floor after senior guard Tomas Sanchez and junior forward Chris Hansen combined for 40 points. With ISU leading last Thursday’s matchup by one point going into halftime, the game was just as close as was expected. It was still either team’s game and junior forward Terrell Brown had 13 points for the Bobcats.

The Cats came out strong in the second half, taking the lead immediately and getting a five-point separation at the 7:57 mark. MSU never trailed the rest of the game, and four players ended up in double figures. Brown ended with 13, sophomore guard Marcus Colbert and senior guard Antonio Biglow added 12 points, and senior forward Flavien Davis threw in 11 points. Head coach Brad Huse said, “We played well against ISU and did a lot of things right,” as the Bobcats also held ISU’s duo of Hansen and Sanchez to 17 points this time around.

The Cats took the floor again on Feb. 22, when the No. 1 Weber State Wildcats came to town. The Wildcats (15-9, 12-4) led by nine going into halftime but the Bobcats got the lead down to six in the first two minutes out of the locker room. “Weber was capitalizing on our little problems, but we still played well,” Huse said. Weber had 16 turnovers in the game, and the Cats were able to convert them into 13 points.

Davis led all Bobcat scorers with 15 points, senior forward Paul Egwuonwu added 14 points and Brown had 12. Weber’s senior guard Davion Berry led all scorers with 20 points as they grabbed the victory, 86-68.

“When you lose a game, never think of what you did wrong. Play the next game thinking of what you must do right,” Biglow said after the loss.

The Cats (13-14, 8-8) play their final home game Feb. 27 against Southern Utah at 7 p.m. The seniors, Egwuonwu, Biglow, Davis and forward Calen Coleman will be honored pre-game.
