The season premiere for men’s and women’s cross country, the MSU Invitational, took place this past Saturday, Sept. 21 at the Bridger Creek Golf Course.
The beautiful weather gave hungry runners a chance to dip their toes into this year’s pool of competition. As the athletes explained last week, they have exhibited a high level of confidence and positive anticipation for their first meet.
It appears this confidence was set at the right caliber due to the exceptional results of the meet. The men’s team took first place while the women took second, with both seniors Cristian Soratos and Heather Demorest taking first in their races respectively.

Head Coach Dale Kennedy commented after the race, “Cristian obviously ran really well but what may not have been as obvious were his teammates behind him.”
“I think the teams will be really encouraged by what they saw and did out there today,” Kennedy said. “I see a lot of good things potentially happening this season as both the men’s and women’s progress.”
As Demorest said in her post-race interview on Saturday, this success is a stepping stone to others in the future. From here on the runners will continue to improve their training and strength as a team.
“Improvement is always at the forefront of our philosophy as we look to close in as a pack with all of our runners,” Kennedy told reporters in closing comments on Saturday.
With these words in mind and this success under their belts, the team looks forward to competing in Missoula on Oct. 4 at the Montana Invitational. This will provide them with another chance to exercise their abilities to work as a team. Additionally, it will push them another step closer toward their goals of placing at the future conference and regional meets.
