Freshman tennis phenomenon Harry James has been playing tennis since a young age. “I started playing when I was seven or eight years old,” James said. “My neighbor was a coach at a local club, and I always had a ball of some sort in my hand.”
The Dunedin, New Zealand native came to MSU for tennis, and also “to be able to study and play at the same time.”
The Business Finance and Accounting major says his favorite part of tennis is traveling and meeting new people, as well as competing. Additionally, “the best part is playing for a team, and competing in close matches,” he said.
In order to prepare for a match, James tries to “relax, go for a quick jog and stretch.”
When it comes to the future, James says anything could happen when it comes to playing professional tennis. “I’ll see how it goes. If I improve a lot, I might try to play a bit professionally.”
Tennis legend Andre Agassi is a role model for James. “He’s experienced a lot and comes across as a nice person,” he explained.
In his free time, James likes to “listen to music, chill with friends, watch movies and ski when I can.”
Overall, James says the team is tight-knit. “Both teams are pretty close, and everyone is sociable and friendly. It would be good to see some more students at home matches!”
