Skating the Winter Away

It can be difficult to get outside and have fun in the winter and although skiing is fun, it can be a bit of a hassle during a busy week. Ice skating is a great alternative. There are three rinks in town maintained by the city and it is quick and easy to rent skates from MSU, so it is time to bundle up and get outside again!

The rinks are located at Beall City Park, Bogert City Park and Southside City Park. They are all open from 12 p.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Friday and from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

If you are counting on being able to skate, you may want to visit the park before you plan on skating, since there are some additional times posted at each park that are unavailable due to hockey clubs or other events.

It doesn’t cost anything to skate, but if you don’t have your own skates, you need to rent some. Luckily, as MSU students, it is easy to get a huge discount. Just bring your CatCard to the ASMSU Outdoor Recreation Center across from Roskie, and you can get rentals for only four dollars a day or two dollars per half-day.

Skates can also be rented at Chalet Sports or Panda Rental, but the price is about three dollars higher. Make sure you bring some soft socks or something similar to stuff in the skates around the ankles to make them more comfortable.

If you’re looking for something exciting to do in the next couple months, ice skating is a fun and cheap way to go. Hint, hint to the guys and girls looking for Valentine’s Day ideas. With ice skating, you will have at least part of a really cool date, and if neither of you are very good, it may be a chance to get a little closer and warm up with hot chocolate afterward. The rinks are only maintained until March, so don’t miss out.
