On a clear and starry Friday night, the MSU Office of Student Engagement gathered dedicated students and faculty for the lighting the M event. Around 20 hikers spread over 250 LED lanterns around the freshly-painted M, illuminating it the night before the Homecoming game against Weber State on Sept. 30.
A majority of Bozeman residents could see the M from 8:30-9:30 p.m. that evening.
In the past, the event was held by the MSU Alumni Foundation, originally sending students up with candles to illuminate the M.
After the lights were placed, cars stopped along Bridger Canyon Drive to look up at the illuminated M. Bobcat fans young and old came out to experience the event. A local family made the hike to bring their future bobcat on his second big homecoming experience. Lighting the M is an important homecoming event that is sure to continue for generations.
