Former SEAL Rob O’Neill charged with DUI, MSU cancels his appearance

Around 2:30 a.m. on Friday, April 8, Rob O’Neill, a former Navy SEAL, was found in his car in Butte. Police were called to the scene by bystanders, and after a failed field-sobriety test and a refusal to take a breathalyzer test, took him into custody. Prosecutors have charged O’Neill with a misdemeanor DUI.

O’Neill was slated to have an appearance at MSU on Monday, April 11 in an event hosted by the Leadership Institute. However, MSU has cancelled the event due to unforeseen circumstances. Executive Director of University Communications Tracy Ellig said, “This caught us by surprise just like everyone else. We would hope the students ask: ‘What would a leader do?’” MSU will still pay O’Neill $28,000 from their general fund to fulfill their contract.

O’Neill is a decorated veteran who served in many operations as a Navy SEAL. He was involved in the rescue of Captain Richard Phillips and Operation Red Wings. Both events have been adapted into major motion pictures. The university is issuing refunds to everyone who bought a ticket.

C’mon Exponent… “unforeseen circumstances”? What does that even mean? Is this a new rule at MSU, no speakers who have been accused of a crime? Or is it just DUI? Or is there a statue of limitations such that if you had a DUI a month ago or a year ago.. no problem.. Or is it just when someone is in the news and might therefore be controversial.. Heavens… controversy at a University.. can’t let that happen.
