Campus officials address parking shortage

Adapted from the Bozeman Daily Chronicle:

As MSU nears its 5,121 parking space capacity, officials are exploring several options for increasing parking.

These options include opening additional parking spaces west of Bobcat Stadium, which would create 600 spaces; finishing the South Fieldhouse Lot and expanding the number of S/B permit spaces; expanding the SUB pay lot to increase short-term visitor parking; contracting with a shuttle service to transport drivers from the stadium lot to the SUB; and building a parking garage, which would be a long-term alternative.

Associate Vice President of University Services Bob Lashaway explained that if the first three options are combined, campus parking permits will likely increase in cost by approximately $5 per year for two years. The cost of parking permits will increase by $17 per year if the shuttle option is selected.

A 450-space parking garage would, according to initial estimates, cost approximately $8.1 million, with long-term debt costs making the total $12 million over 20 years.

While the parking garage would not be completed until the fall of 2016, the other improvement options could be available in the fall of 2013.
