Veteran students of MSU may notice a change in the Renne Library this semester.
The main floor is now home to the merged IT Help and Reference desks, which are located under the “Ask” sign in the library commons area.
The collaboration between the IT Center and library was largely developed by Rod Laakso from the IT Center. He stated, “Our goal is to enhance the productivity of students by providing outstanding customer support in the use of MSU technical services.”
In the past, students could only access the IT Center through a door on the outside of the library. Library employees had to redirect students outside and around the building to get computer assistance. Reference Desk employees, who provide research assistance, would often help students with IT concerns, rather than sending them to the IT Center.
The Reference Desk portion of the combined Help Desk provides research assistance to students and faculty. The employees specialize in helping people use the library’s many resources.
Along with the Help Desk, the library’s first floor includes group study rooms, computers with printing capabilities and a writing center where students can receive help with essays and other writing assignments.
On the floors above, students will find most of the library’s resources for research, along with quiet places for studying and reading. The basement houses the main IT Center that handles computer hardware problems.
Student Body President Kiah Abbey commented on the merge of the IT Help Desk with the Reference Desk, stating, “It’s a great collaboration to see — having someone right there to help in the library will be so nice.”
