Film showing gives powder to the people

The Coldsmoke People’s Choice Tour launches Saturday, Jan. 26 at the Cat’s Paw. The tour, which features stops in Bozeman, Denver, Whistler and Vail, is a build-up to the annual Coldsmoke Awards — one of Bozeman’s greatest celebrations of winter culture.

This particular stop is the kick-off event of the People’s Choice tour, allowing locals to get a live viewing of the nominees and then vote for their favorite. Dozens of films will be screened throughout the night, showcasing the best winter filmmakers have to offer.

The awards honor the absolute best in winter filmmaking, with nominees ranging in subject from the exploration of Alaska’s glaciers to the influence of snowboarding on Afghanistan’s future. Mixed in with these inspirational and informative films is some footage of the best riding on one or two boards in the world.

This stop on the tour gives Bozemanites a chance to make their voices heard before the awards are held at the Emerson Cultural Center in March. This year, there will also be a brand new online voting system that will allow everyone who couldn’t make the live showing to view and vote on the Coldsmoke website, coldsmokeco.com.

This event features free giveaways, raffles, great drink specials and live music from Milton Menasco and the Big Fiasco. Drink specials start at 6 p.m. and the films are set to begin around 7 p.m. Get there early, as the event has sold out every year in the past.
